Internship - Development and Evaluation of Antifouling Surface Coatings for Wearable Electrochemical Biosensors

About us

We are developing Wear & Forget® wearable devices for continuous sweat biochemistry monitoring by combining on-demand sweat extraction with aptamer-based electrochemical biosensing. Based at the Lausanne Biopôle, we are a multidisciplinary team of fewer than 20 scientists and engineers united by a shared ambition to translate cutting-edge research into impactful healthcare technologies. We thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where scientific excellence, creativity, and rapid iteration drive innovation.

The project

Reliable long-term electrochemical biosensors require surface coatings that minimize nonspecific adsorption while maintaining efficient electron transfer. While self-assembled monolayers are widely used for biosensor functionalization, their stability and resistance to biofouling can vary considerably depending on their molecular structure. Alternative antifouling interfaces offer promising strategies for improving long-term sensor performance.
In this project, you will systematically compare a range of antifouling surface chemistries with different hydrophilic and charge properties. You will investigate how coating chemistry influences electron-transfer efficiency, electrochemical stability, and resistance to fouling under biologically relevant conditions. The objective is to identify surface coatings that provide robust performance for continuous wearable electrochemical biosensors.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a literature review on antifouling surface chemistries for electrochemical biosensors
  • Fabricate mono- and multilayers of selected coatings
  • Evaluate electron-transfer efficiency and electrochemical performance
  • Compare coating stability during repeated electrochemical measurements
  • Assess antifouling performance using model biological media
  • Recommend the most promising surface chemistry for long-term wearable biosensor applications

About you

  • You are studying chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, biomedical engineering, or a related field
  • You enjoy hands-on laboratory work and have an interest in electrochemistry, biosensors, or surface chemistry
  • You are curious, analytical, and methodical, and enjoy translating scientific concepts into practical solutions
  • Previous experience with electrochemical techniques or surface functionalization is an advantage but not required
