Internship - Development of a Self-Powered Iontophoretic Patch
Internship - Development of a Self-Powered Iontophoretic Patch
About us
We are developing Wear & Forget® wearables for continuous sweat biochemistry monitoring, combining on-demand sweat extraction with aptamer-based biosensing. Based at the Lausanne Biopôle, we are a <20 FTE small, multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers driven by a shared passion for impact. We thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where creativity, scientific excellence, and rapid iteration are at the core of everything we do.
The role
We are looking for an intern or Master’s thesis student to help develop a self-powered iontophoresis patch for sweat induction.
The goal is to investigate whether a miniaturized electrochemical power source can be integrated directly into the patch to deliver the current required for pilocarpine iontophoresis, without relying on an external battery.
You will work from literature-informed material and architecture choices, build a focused set of prototypes, characterize their electrical and electrochemical performance, and support integration with the iontophoresis system.
Responsibilities
- Review self-powered iontophoresis, wearable galvanic cells, and relevant transdermal delivery systems
- Define electrical requirements for the patch, including current density, operating time, voltage, and capacity
- Select a small number of promising electrode and electrolyte combinations based on literature
- Fabricate and test miniaturized electrochemical cell prototypes
- Perform OCV, load, internal-resistance, capacity, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, CV, and EIS measurements where relevant
- Integrate the selected prototype with hydrogels and iontophoresis electrodes
- Evaluate current stability, pH changes, side reactions, reproducibility, and preliminary pilocarpine transport
About you
- You are studying electrochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, biomedical engineering, microengineering, applied physics or a related field.
- You are comfortable with hands-on experimental work and interested in wearable devices, electrochemical systems, or transdermal delivery. Experience with a potentiostat, electrochemical characterization, hydrogels, flexible electronics or data analysis is an advantage.
- You are curious, independent, practical and motivated by turning scientific concepts into working prototypes.
What we offer
- A highly applied project with a clear path from literature to prototype
- A fast-moving, highly collaborative team where decisions happen quickly
- Access to EPFL's world-class CMi cleanroom and research ecosystem
- Opportunity to develop into a long-term role within the company
